Bursting with flavor, this go-to spaghetti recipe is extremely easy to quickly make yourself!
No need for any pre-made sauces, you only need 4 or 5 ingredients to make the best homemade spaghetti dish! Fresh tomatoes, onion, garlic, and mushrooms are all stars in this recipe!
I used to think you had to be an Italian chef to make spaghetti without a store-bought sauce. Who knew such a flavorful dish could be whipped up in under 30 minutes?!!
At least once a week I would end up searching, “easy spaghetti recipes,” and looking through so many different recipes for a simple go-to spaghetti dish. Now I can make my own without even following a recipe, and you will be able to too!
This dish is easily customizable, with just tomatoes, onion, and garlic for the base, you can add mushrooms if you have any, and adding a red bell pepper would also be delicious. You could also solely use canned tomatoes of course, but I try to keep a few fresh tomatoes on hand for times like this!

Healing properties of Onion and Garlic
Each powerful ingredient in this recipe contributes something special to our health.
Both garlic and onions, have antioxidant and anti-cancer properties! They each contain high levels of inulin and FOS (fructooligosaccharides), which can help boost your immune system, improve your digestion, and provide fuel for the bacteria in your gut.
* It took time healing my microbiome for it to be able to properly digest garlic and onions, but now they are a base for so many of my meals!
As with anything that our stomachs don’t digest well, it’s best to start incorporating them in super small amounts. We have to give our gut a chance to learn to digest it rather than overwhelming it with a bunch of something it doesn’t know how to process!
What you’ll need:
This go-to spaghetti is so simple! Here’s what you’ll need:
- fresh tomatoes
- garlic
- onion
- mushrooms (optional)
- a can of crushed tomatoes
- pasta of choice, I either use penne or spaghetti, but any will be perfect
- balsamic vinegar, could also use a red or white wine
- dried oregano and basil
How to make this simple go-to spaghetti
To make this dish, you’ll need a pot for the pasta and a sauté pan for the sauce.
Start by boiling the water for the pasta.
Next, chop your garlic and onion and put them in a hot sauté pan with a splash of water. If you’re adding mushrooms chop those and the fresh tomatoes, and add them to the pan.
Adding salt as everything cooks will help release moisture in the food, making your pasta much juicer.
Mix in the seasonings like salt, pepper, and Italian spices (oregano, basil, and parsley), balsamic vinegar, and crushed tomatoes.
Simmer for 10 minutes, add your pasta, and cook another minute with the sauce!
Take some deep breaths before you eat, admire what a beautiful meal you have created. So full of juicy vegetables bursting with flavor! Your gut loves being nourished!
